When I first heard the second single from Neon Hitch’s debut album Beg, Borrow, and Steal, I thought it sounded a bit familiar. Then it dawned on me…

I first featured the song back in March of 2011. The original track still had co-writer Bruno Mars on the hook, with new artist Jahron B filling in the verses. I was always a big fan of the song but according to Jahron, Mars’ camp simply leaked it on to the Internet, and nothing really came of it.

Fast forward to 2012. My theory is that perhaps Hitch’s alleged boyfriend Travie McCoy hit his former collaborator Mars up for a track. Bruno dusted off “Gold” and gave it to McCoy for Hitch. Although maybe I’m wrong, and maybe it’s also just a coincidence that Travie’s cousin Tyga is also featured on the new version.
