INTERVIEW: Wynter Gordon on Wardrobe Prep, Dance Music, and Traveling with Flo Rida
Wynter Gordon’s introduction as a new artist wasn’t typical for the industry. But, when you’re working with Flo Rida on what would eventually be a top five hit in the country, untypical is par for the course.
“The good ole’ days!” exclaimed Wynter, born Diana Gordon, when I brought up the 2009 track “Sugar” during an interview on “The Ralphie Radio Show.” “That was like the first time that I traveled the world in style, because Flo Rida surely does travel in style.”
The best hotels, with the best accommodations, and some prime time gigs like “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” were a small sample of the perks that the singer/songwriter experienced with Flo. But now Gordon is out on her own, making a name for herself.
Wynter just wrapped up a tour in support of Fall Out Boy front man Patrick Stump. I ran in to her backstage during their stop in Philadelphia at World Live Café. Gordon was a bit frazzled. It was just minutes before she was supposed to go on stage and she needed to iron a skirt. The problem: Wynter thought she didn’t have any water for the iron in her dressing room. Quickly I ran to the bar, grabbed two cups and sprinted back to her. Turns out, while my efforts were appreciated, they weren’t needed.
“There was a bathroom right in the room,” Gordon admitted. “I didn’t even know.”
Surely, clothing irons and water were not an issue with Flo Rida’s hospitality rider. But, now that Gordon is flying solo, she can truly live out her dream of making music for the masses. Her first single, “Dirty Talk,” burned up DJ crates across the world and sold over three million copies. Wynter released the With the Music I Die EP in June. The extended play, which has already spawned a top three dance charter in “Til Death,” also features her next single, “Buy My Love.” The track fuses a retro 90’s pop sound with current dance beats, provided by Swedish House Mafia’s Axwell.
“I was doing a bunch of serious songs (for the EP),” explained Gordon. “’Buy My Love’ was one of the more fun, cheekier ones. I’m kind of leaning more towards that sound, moving forward.”
Certainly dance music is seeing quite the resurgence, led by big time DJs and producers like the aforementioned SHM along with David Guetta, Afrojack, The Cataracs, and others. But Gordon believes that like any other genre or group of artists, a lack of evolution could lead to audiences becoming bored and moving away from the product.
“Nothing can stay the same and be popular for a long, long, long period of time,” Gordon said. “I don’t think we can all do the same thing for too long.”
VIDEO: 2011 MTV Video Music Awards Black Carpet News and Notes
There were three big changes this year to the MTV Video Music Awards: no host, the red carpet went from white to black, and all of the arrivals were inside at the Marriott, which is next door to the Nokia Theatre.
Save those, it was another star-studded event in Los Angeles, which set a network record for the largest VMA rating in the show’s history.
- While I was updating on my Twitter and Facebook as celebrities walked by, I missed Beyonce’s big announcement that her and husband Jay-Z were expecting their first child. I did get a quick work with the former Destiny Child star, who told me she was looking forward to her performance later that evening.
Beyonce’s choreographer, Frank Gatson, elaborated a little more.
“Simple and sweet,” he said of the expecting mother’s forthcoming performance. “She’s performing, ‘Love on Top,’ my favorite song off her new album.”
Gatson was unaware if the late announcement of Beyonce’s performance was due to a late addition or simply, “saving the best for last.” Of course, the impending pregnancy and announcement, which occurred during the MTV VMA preshow, could have also played a role.
- Lil Twist, one of Young Money’s youngest rappers, said that the camp was aware of Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV leaking this past week, but shrugged his shoulders when asked for a reaction.
“Nah, it doesn’t affect us,” Twist said. “Whatever, it comes out tonight at midnight.”
Weezy wrapped up the VMAs with an explosive performance, and then celebrated his album release at a private party in Hollywood.
- I was fortunate enough to attend the In Touch Weekly “Idols and Icons” VMA after party on Sunset Boulevard. Amongst some of the celebs there: “Entourage” and adult film star Sasha Grey, a fit-looking Kendra Wilkinson, Kat DeLuna, and my buddies Hot Chelle Rae – who divulged that the band’s follow-up single to the smash, “Tonight Tonight” will feature New Boyz.
- Andrew Dice Clay is making a comeback, in large part to his current arc on “Entourage.”
“I wanted to do it right away,” said Clay on making the decision to join. “I’ve always been a big fan of the show.”
If you watch the HBO show, you know that Dice’s classic line thus far is: “Dice does the f**king.” Was that his mentality back in his heyday?
“I still think that way,” the comedian responded.
- We all know that DJ Pauly D is usually “DTF” – but recently he took a break from his “Jersey Shore” antics to join Britney Spears on tour. The Rhode Island-native says he would talk to Spears every night.
“It was amazing,” he gushed of the experience. “The best thing I’ve ever done in my life.”

I’ve heard the story a many times… if you want David Guetta to work with you, then you work with him in return. He’s traded tracks with the best of them, from The Black Eyed Peas to Akon. When I heard he produced Flo Rida’s “Club Can’t Handle Me” – I had an idea of what went down…
Now, that track hits the net, Guetta featuring not just Flo Rida, but also Nicki Minaj. This has “Summer Anthem” written all over it.
