“American Idol” season nine finalist Tim Urban stopped by “The Ralphie Show” because he’ll be performing at Miss Connecticut USA this weekend. It serves as the state qualifier to Miss USA, and yielded the current national crown-holder, Erin Brady. I am a judge for the competition.

Tim also talked about his single, “Perfectly You,” and the current state of “Idol.”

Erin Brady entered the Miss Connecticut USA pageant in 2011, seeking to represent The Nutmeg State in the Miss USA 2012 competition. The East Hampton, Conn. Native placed first runner-up; not bad considering it was her first pageant, ever.

About a month after the October 2011 event, Brady’s boyfriend Tony Capasso proposed, and she said yes.

“He had it planned and he said, ‘Thank God you didn’t win because it totally would’ve blown our plans,’” Brady recalled in an interview with “The Ralphie Show.” “After the first Miss Connecticut (USA) we left for Italy, about three weeks later.”

The current titleholder revealed that she and Capasso discussed the idea of another try for the crown before she entered in 2012.

“It was, ‘If this is something you want to do, by all means,” Brady noted of her fiancé’s response to her idea. “Obviously not knowing that I’d become Miss USA!”

For full disclosure, I was a member of the judges’ panel that placed Brady second in 2011. While she had the look, I felt her lack of experience would have hurt her during the national competition in Las Vegas. Hindsight is 20/20 of course; Brady concurred.

“I hadn’t really had any clue as to what was involved and what I needed to prepare for the next year,” she said. “Coming first runner-up for me, never having done it in that system, was just overwhelmingly exciting.”

Little did Brady know, the “overwhelmingly exciting” part of her life was just getting started – the engagement, winning the state qualifier, and taking the Miss USA crown in Vegas last June. Now she finds herself yielding offers like the one she accepted to star in Gavin DeGraw’s new music video for his single, “Best I Ever Had.”

“I actually had really been a big fan of his even before he kind of came back and has this new flavor and this new sound,” Brady said, referring to the up-tempo, rhyme-driven verses in the artist’s new single. “It was just great, because I had never been a part of that before.”

The project did prompt another conversation between Brady and her fiancé: the Accounting degree holder and DeGraw lock lips at the end of the piece.

“It was a little interesting, but it’s part of the job, and I thought it was tasteful,” she remarked. “He’s a gentleman, and we’re in front of 50 other people.”

Later this year Brady will travel to Russia to compete for the Miss Universe crown, currently held by former Miss USA Olivia Culpo. The pageant airs on November 9. The same country winning the title in consecutive years is not unprecedented; Venezuela completed the feat in 2008 and 2009.

So I have a connection to Sunday night’s Miss USA winner, Erin Brady of Connecticut.

I judged the Connecticut Miss USA qualifier in 2011. That was Erin’s first try at the Miss USA crown. She placed first runner-up in the competition, and earned a second place vote from me.

Brady was just as beautiful then, but what held her back in my eyes was her inexperience. She admitted she dealt with social anxiety and even on stage told the audience how ridiculously nervous she was. I thought that if she was having a hard time with a local pageant in Hartford, Vegas might be too much at this stage.

Hindsight is 20/20 and I still feel we made the right decision. She would have competed against Olivia Culpo last year, who of course went on to win Miss Universe. I’d like to think that the extra year of going through the pageant system helped Brady move on to the USA crown, but then again, that would be pure speculation on my part.

A big congratulations to the new Miss Teen USA, Logan West of Hartford, CT. Over the weekend the Miss Teen USA pageant was held at the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas, and the 18 year-old won the competition over 50 other girls.

I was a judge for West’s state qualifier in Connecticut. The newly crowned pageant queen will move to New York where she will live for a year with Miss USA, Olivia Culpo, in Trump Tower.

I feel like I’ve been talking, Facebooking, and Tweeting about this a lot. But, if you still haven’t heard – last weekend I was honored to serve as one of six judges for the Miss Connecticut USA 2012 pageant in Farmington, CT. I’ll also be judging Miss Pennsylvania USA, set for this December in Pittsburgh. The competition serves as one of the state qualifiers for the Miss USA pageant, which will be televised nationally next summer on NBC. The venture is a co-op between NBC Universal and Donald J. Trump. Of course, Miss USA then goes on to compete for the title of Miss Universe.

After winning Miss Connecticut USA on what was her last year of eligibility, Marie-Lynn Piscitelli called in to my show on Q105 in New London, CT to talk about her journey to the crown and what she does besides pageants: Piscitelli owns two businesses along with a Masters in Taxation!
