VIDEO: Jason Derulo Offers 2014 American Music Awards Predictions

On Monday, nominations for the 2014 American Music Awards were revealed. Iggy Azalea leads all artists with nods in six categories, including “Artist Of The Year” and “New Artist Of The Year Presented By Kohl’s.” Nominations are determined by fan interactions with Billboard Magazine and Billboard.com. The winners will be chosen by fan votes at AMAVote.com.

For Azalea, it is yet another milestone in a year filled with them. The 24 year-old artist scored a summer anthem with the Charli XCX-assisted “Fancy” and then charted a second hit from her debut album “The New Classic” thanks to “Black Widow” which features Rita Ora. Azalea has toured the country and performed at this year’s Billboard Music Awards and MTV Video Music Awards. During a pre-show benefit for the latter event, Azalea fell off stage while performing. The mishap did not happen again during the live telecast.

“It’s important to get the stage dimensions ahead of time, and then practice your performance within those constraints,” noted singer/songwriter Jason Derulo. The “Talk Dirty” singer teamed up with the aforementioned Charli XCX to reveal the nominations on “Good Morning America” in Times Square. Derulo is no stranger to performing on live TV either, having also performed at this year’s BBMAs. “A lot of people just rent out a dance studio and don’t have the dimensions set-up. And that’s when you might fall off the stage, yunno what I’m saying?”

Derulo, who is getting ready to kick off his “Talk Dirty Tour” later this week, was responding to a question I asked about his preparation for live performances.

“You need your time to rehearse,” he continued. “Make sure you get that time in.”

We also decided to put the multi-platinum recording artist on the spot and get his predictions for some of the AMA categories. There are 10 artists nominated for “Artist Of The Year,” which Taylor Swift took home last year. In addition to Azalea, Beyonce, Luke Bryan, Eminem, Imagine Dragons, John Legend, Lorde, One Direction, Katy Perry, and Pharrell Williams all received nods.

“I gotta go with my dude Luke Bryan!” Derulo declared. It may come as a surprise on the outset, especially since earlier in the interview the singer noted he was a big Katy Perry fan. But don’t forget that Bryan and Derulo shared a spot on the Florida Georgia Line “This Is How We Roll” remix.

It was also revealed on Monday that Charli XCX will perform at this year’s AMAs. She scored her first solo hit this year with “Boom Clap” and drops her album “Sucker” in December. The songstress flew in from Detroit to help announce some of the nominees on live TV, and then caught a flight back out to Chicago so she could continue her tour.

The 2014 American Music Awards air live from Los Angeles on Sunday, November 23 at 8 pm. The show emanates from the Nokia Theatre at L.A. Live and will be broadcast on ABC.
