In addition to breaking the news on “The Ralphie Radio Show” that her next album to be released in the States will be called, ViVa, Kat DeLuna explained the inspiration behind the LP’s first single, “Dancing Tonight.”

The track was produced by EightySix, who DeLuna says she discovered when he approached her after a show with a demo!

Kat DeLuna made it official Wednesday night on “The Ralphie Radio Show” – Inside Out, the original title to her sophomore U.S. album, is out. The 23 year-old revealed that the LP will be entitled, ViVa, and she plans to drop it this year.

“I released (Inside Out), the European version, in Belgium last year,” said DeLuna, who also noted that the record is just became available in France. “The album was always intended to have two versions: the American and the European.”

But when DeLuna came back from Belgium to put the final touches on Inside Out, she realized that perhaps the material wouldn’t work in America as well as it had overseas.

“You know how in Spanish we say, ‘Viva!’ and everything is given an ‘oomph’?” DeLuna asked. “That’s what (the American version) signifies to me.”

DeLuna is releasing all new material on ViVa, starting with the lead single. “Dancing Tonight” is what we’ve come to expect from the pop star – high energy, big beats, Latin-infused. Kat teamed up again with producer EightySix for the track, the same guy behind “Dance Bailalo.” DeLuna revealed that she is still working with RedOne. The Moroccan-producer broke on to the scene by creating “Whine Up,” and is widely credited with the development of Lady GaGa’s sound.

“(RedOne) was the executive producer, with Tyrone Edmonds,” she said of her recent European album. “We have that chemistry, but on the American version, there aren’t a lot of RedOne tracks.”

The songstress explained RedOne’s diminished role in her forthcoming album was purely a byproduct of timing. Some could speculate otherwise: a number of media outlets have noted that the RedOne-produced, DeLuna track “Party O’Clock” sounds awfully similar to Jennifer Lopez’s “On the Floor.” DeLuna insists there’s no bad blood between her and the producer.

“These things happen. Sometimes one producer, not knowingly, might do a song for both artists and they sound exactly the same,” she said. “To tell you the truth Ralphie, the one good thing that I can say to you and not a lot of artists can say: I am the creative force behind my work. I have a formula from before RedOne (and I met). That whole Latin-Pop scene, I brought that to the table.”

The formula is undeniable – DeLuna’s lone U.S. hit is 2007’s “Whine Up,” yet she has maintained relevancy for years after, not just in America, but abroad. The singer credits her sound and her fans for relating to and sticking with her. But what makes the feat even more impressive is that it’s all happened over the course of three record label stints. DeLuna jumped from Epic Records to Universal Motown, and is now releasing music in the States through Edmonds’ Global Music Brand. Internationally, she still records under Universal.

Few artists receive a shot with one major label. Even fewer survive a transition from one to another. Kat’s first album was called 9 Lives. Given how she’s survived and succeeded through the past four years, perhaps ViVa is the more appropriate title for the follow-up after all.

Kat DeLuna insists, Inside Out, her sophomore LP, will be released this year.

“No, no, no, not hopefully, it is!” she quickly replied, correcting my statement that she’d “hopefully” release the album later this year. “We haven’t picked the precise date yet, but looking toward around the summer.”

Some may have been wondering if DeLuna would ever release her second album: the project has gone through multiple years of work, multiple singles… even multiple record labels. The “Whine Up” singer left Epic Records in 2008 for Universal Motown. Since landing at the label, she’s collaborated with label mates Lil Wayne (“Unstoppable”) and Akon (“Push Push”).

DeLuna says the latter track is the official debut single for Inside Out. Produced by David Guetta, Kat created her own “Push Push” dance, which she already taught to Akon. The artist plans on uploading a tutorial to YouTube.

“I love to dance,” she gushed. “It’s funny, when I wake up and I’m getting ready in the morning, like I’m just dancing (while) looking at myself in the mirror.”

Dances have been a common theme in Kat’s singles. The “Whine Up” rose in popularity as the corresponding song shot up the charts. Of course, who could forget Perez Hilton dancing like a fool to “Dance Bailalo” last summer?

Spring ’08

Hilton, real name Mario Lavandeira, shares Latino heritage with Deluna – he’s Cuban, she’s Dominican. The celebrity blogger jumped on the bandwagon of critics in September 2008 after DeLuna received a chorus of boos following her rendition of the “The Star Spangled Banner” on “Monday Night Football.” But, he loved “Dance Bailalo”, and apparently is a fan of her new work.

“He actually heard it a couple of days ago, and he said ‘Smash,’” DeLuna reported of Hilton’s reaction to the song. “He’s been a really good, amazing friend… you know, we can be friends today and I’ll still love him if tomorrow he goes on the other side.”

Hey, in entertainment, you never know – things change quickly and can turn inside out in no time. But don’t bother telling that to Kat – no pun intended – you’d be preaching to the choir.

“It’s a blessing to be able to do what you love every day,” DeLuna said. “With this second album, I’m so excited for my fans… people are going to discover me, again.”

Spring, 2008

in a sneak look at this week’s ralphie report – which will be published in the weekender.

As if “Concert for a Cause 6” didn’t bring enough of a live music party to Northeast PA last week, 97 BHT brought a little more.

Epic Records artist Kat DeLuna ran the show last weekend inside The Wilkes-Barre Hardware Bar. Kat killed it – in a set just shy of a half-hour that included her hits “Whine Up” and “Run The Show.”

“C’mon PA – we gonna get it poppin’!” Kat emphatically yelled while dancing and singing.

The Bronx-born singer also encouraged the jam-packed audience to join on the fun. In between songs, DeLuna brought a bride-to-be on stage. With Kat’s buoying, the future misses grinded to Enur’s “Calabria”, while masses of college students and thirty-something’s alike cheered.

It’s interesting enough that the former opera singer leads the party inside bars and clubs across the nation. After all, she’s only 20 years old.

“It’s funny because usually I like, go in, perform, and then they’re like, ‘Get out – you have to get out quick!’” Kat said the night previous to the show.

Of course, DeLuna was anything but hurried out of Hardware Bar. After taking refuge in her dressing room, Kat spent another forty minutes meeting and greeting BHT V.I.P. winners in a back hallway directly outside the drinking establishment. Everyone snapped pictures, snagged autographed photos, and even received a compliment or two about their attire.

This certainly isn’t the last anyone will see of the Dominican-rooted star. Her CD, 9 Lives, is set for a summer re-release. Kat’s manager allowed BHT a quick listen to one of the new tracks for the LP – a song that Akon produced and hopped on. The record could be a summer anthem, similar to last year’s “Whine Up.”

THE POLITICAL INFERNO CEASES

Last Tuesday, the dust kicked up by the Presidential Primary in Northeast PA finally settled. In the end, Senator Hillary Clinton emerged from the raucous victorious. The candidate, who spent summers vacationing in Lake Winola, defeated Senator Barack Obama by 10 points. Here in NEPA – Clinton’s margin of victory reached 3-to-1.

About an hour before the polls closed, Senator Clinton reached out to 97 BHT – speaking exclusively with A.J. In The Afternoon and myself.

While speaking with A.J., Clinton reminisced about her vacations in the area, and her grandfather and father’s strong ties to Scranton. I immediately inquired about her plans to help reduce the cost of higher education. I also couldn’t help but ask the junior senator about her current emotions.

“I’m always excited, and a little anxious,” Clinton admitted.

Clinton didn’t need to worry, as her candidacy lived to see another primary.

seriously, this week just kept twirling inside the bht studios…
