Archives For 3oh3

The Colorado-based electro-pop duo will release Omens on June 18.

It sounds like an oxymoron, but 3OH!3 is beginning to wind down by playing some dates on Vans Warped Tour.

“We’re kind of reaching the end of our cycle for this record (Streets of Gold),” Nathaniel Motte told me at Vans Warped Tour last week. “We’re going to take some time off, and kind of recuperate. And then, we’ve been working progressively on a lot of material and I’m excited to get time off, get some head space, and go right in to making a new record, I think it’ll be fun.”

Motte and partner-in-crime Sean Foreman are creating that LP in Colorado and California, with some past and new collaborators. To hold fans over, the band recently released “Robot” – complete with a music video premiere on Will Ferrell’s “Funny or Die” website. The song will also serve as another to add to the duo’s Warped Tour set list. Unlike previous years, 3OH!3 only joins the summer festival for about two weeks this time.

“It’s kind of like a nice chunk of it before you start getting a little bit sick of parking lots and get sun stroke,” Foreman semi-joked. “Honestly, we’ve loved doing it in years past. It’s just this year, we’re going to try and take some time off the road and get some writing done.”

Motte echoed similar sentiments about the tour, which 3OH!3 found success on before “Don’t Trust Me” became a chart-topping hit.

“It kind of breaks down that barrier between fans and bands,” noted Nat. “We’ve had some of our better shows on this tour and so it just made sense.”

3OH!3’s last date on Warped is July 23 in Uniondale.

Don’t call it a comeback, but feel free to file this one in the “Throwback” section – Paramore is returning to the Vans Warped Tour.

Hayley Williams and company will join the trek for six dates this summer, starting on Thursday July 14 at Toyota Pavilion at Montage Mountain in Scranton. The band joins a list of other Warped Tour alums returning to the tour – including main stage acts 3OH!3 and Gym Class Heroes. Canadian pop-rockers Simple Plan also rejoin for the group’s first “Warped” stint since 2003.

Paramore had an interesting holiday season – at the end of December last year the band announced that two of its founding members, Zac and Josh Farro, would be departing. Statements have been exchanged publicly between the Farro brothers and the remaining members of Paramore – namely Josh and Hayley. Despite the tumultuous times, Williams told MTV News earlier this year that not only will Paramore stay together, but the band will release new music in 2011.

Crunk-rockers 3OH!3 have had a many tours of duty at “Warped” – as both a relatively unknown act in 2008 and prior – and as the main attraction in 2009 – riding high that summer off of the number one hit, “Don’t Trust Me.” Travie McCoy and Gym Class Heroes are certainly no stranger to Nat and Sean – the two groups have traveled together both on the summer festival and other dates. This is GCH’s first proper tour since McCoy launched a solo career capped with the smash song, “Billionaire” featuring Bruno Mars.

Some in the music business knew of B.o.B and his talents well before he scored a number one record and two top ten hits with his album B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray. Count Cobra Starship’s Gabe Saporta as one of those people.

“I was a huge fan of his when ‘I’ll Be In The Sky’ came out, I thought that song was gonna be a monster,” revealed the front man. “To me, he was the new Andre 3000.”

Saporta enjoyed B.o.B’s work so much that he asked the rapper to cameo on “The World Will Never Do” – which is the last track on Hot Mess.

“That is actually one of the songs we’re proudest of on the record,” Saporta said of the collab. “It’s the last song on the album – and that always kind of happens with Cobra records – like, I kind of start listening to our own record from track 6 onward, and the last song is always, usually, my favorite.”

Gabe Saporta of Cobra Starship invited “The RRS” aboard Cobra’s tour bus (which Toby Keith also uses, true story) to chat about the band’s tour with 3OH!3 and Travie McCoy along with a few select tracks from Hot Mess. In Part 2, Ryland Blackinton also joins in on the fun.

Speaking of tracks from Hot Mess, Cobra recently released a video for track 7, “Living In The Sky With Diamonds” – a song that departs from the party-on message in the LP’s first two singles.

“I feel like all the songs we’ve done so far, people that haven’t heard Cobra Starship yet, a lot of them are probably like, ‘Wow these guys are just like, complete douches,’” the lead singer confessed, before I asked him to elaborate. “I guess if you only hear the two songs (“Good Girls Go Bad”, “Hot Mess”) they’re both about like, kinda getting drunk and going crazy and me encouraging girls to be on their worst behavior. But, we have a sensitive side too.”

The music video was shot by a film school student in the UK. English model Peaches Geldof stars in the production, which can be viewed on Cobra’s official website and YouTube.

With the first single from Streets of Gold entitled “My First Kiss” – Nat and Sean answered a question that will more than likely be asked a lot over the next few weeks – what was their first kiss like?

The track features Ke$ha and is on iTunes now.

Nathaniel Motte told me back on March 3, aka 3/03 Day, that he wanted to finish the 3OH!3’s second LP, Streets of Gold, before they hit the road for a trek with Cobra Starship and Travie McCoy on the Too Fast For Love tour.

Mission accomplished.

“We’re actually going back and forth now and getting mixes back and commenting on mixes right now,” Nat said of the album, which is scheduled for a June 29 release. “Can’t tell you how excited we are to have new music out.”

3OH!3 dropped Want, which spawned the huge hit “Don’t Trust Me”, back in July of 2008. There was no timeline to write, record, or release that record. That wasn’t the case with Streets of Gold.

The fellas from Colorado also talked about a recent college show in which they played outdoors through a storm with lightening.

“We took the first month and went up in the mountains and demoed a bunch of tracks that yunno, Nat had been working on production on the road… I had some vocal ideas,” said Sean Foreman. “We went up and just made as many songs as we could.”

The group narrowed 18 demos to 14 tracks which you’ll hear on the new LP. The first single is called, “My First Kiss”, and it features pop-star Ke$ha. 3OH!3 teamed up with her on “Blah Blah Blah” – and given the success of that song as well as Ke$ha’s popularity at the moment, Foreman felt it was “an obvious step.”

“Listening to the album, there’s a lot of great songs, but I think especially as like just one to get back out there with, it’s awesome,” Foreman continued. “I think it’s perfect, I hope everyone likes it.”

“We wrote that song with her a long time ago,” Motte added. “We wrote her part, and wanted a girl to feature.”

The band was introduced to her as an up-and-coming artist my mutual friend/producer Dr. Luke. And the rest as they say, is history.

“My First Kiss” hit iTunes on Tuesday. It’s available as a free download from the band’s official website if you preorder the new album.

Nat from 3OH!3 explained on “The Ralphie Radio Show that “Hey” is a cut from Lil Jon’s forthcoming LP, and the version obtained by “The RRS” is missing Jon’s verses.

Did Nathaniel Motte and Sean Foreman need another reason to drink? Eh, probably not. But that doesn’t stop the band from turning March 3 in to an annual party day. Yes, the band 3OH!3 considers 3/03 its personal day of homage.

“You might as well create another drinking holiday for yourself,” Motte said on “The Ralphie Radio Show”, taking some time from the festivities to call in to “The RRS” on the band’s day of celebration. The group also planned a uStream chat with fans later. “There’s all those Hallmark holidays that they created, why can’t we make our own?”

Looking back on the band’s past 365 days, there’s a lot they can drink to. “Don’t Trust Me” hit the top of the radio charts over the summer – as Motte and Foreman toured the country headlining the Vans Warped Tour. Just a year prior, they played the festival in near-obscurity, covered in the shadows of other bands who were receiving mainstream radio love: We The Kings, Gym Class Heroes, and Katy Perry. 3OH!3 befriended the latter artist and received her help to in remixing its second single, “Starstrukk”.

Now, the Colorado natives prepare for a busy spring – a cross-country trek with Cobra Starship and Travie McCoy of the aforementioned Heroes. 3OH!3 is also in the studio finishing Streets of Gold, the follow-up album to Want. While all of this takes place, Ke$ha’s “Blah Blah Blah”, a track they’re featured on, climbs up the charts.

“It’s cool. Yunno, it’s a different sounding song for a girl,” Nat noted of the Benny Blanco production. “It’s like, real sassy and she raps on it. So, I think it’s great. It bodes well for her… hopefully it’s a good sign for us.”

Working on the forthcoming LP prevented 3OH!3 from making it back to the 303 – Boulder, Colorado – Nat revealed that the group is currently in the studio with hit-maker Dr. Luke. Motte hopes to drop a single to radio right around the tour’s launch date, with an album release tentatively scheduled for late June.

And if you’re holding out for some type of last second surprise – an album release that coincides with Warped Tour dates – well, don’t hold your breath.

“Honestly, I’ve spent my last two summers in parking lots, so I’m a little excited to get out,” Nat admitted, while also crediting the summer shows with building their road experience. “It was a great tour for us man. We’ll miss it a little bit, but yunno, I think we’ll manage to have good shows and hopefully people that go to see ‘Warped’ will come to check us out.”
